Brigade work in the Methodist church
Brigade work is growing in many circuits with 78 registered companies, though there are some that are functioning but not yet registered.

Starting a Company

When starting a new Brigade Company, the following steps are followed:

  1. Get permission from leaders in the local congregation.
  2. Choose committed Christian men and women to attend Officers’ training courses.
  3. The officers should be over 18 years.

Each Company must be formed within a church setting, mission or institution where religious instruction is given regularly.

Membership to a group or Company is renewed annually to welcome new members and encourage the old ones. If the training scheme is maintained, it is expected that the trainees will be motivated and grow spiritually and numerically. The Bible is the rock on which every subject matter is built. Children are trained to mature in their Christian faith and commitment to God. What they learn must be relevant to their daily lives now and in future. Proverbs 22:6: “Teach a child how he should live, and he will remember it all his life” (Good News Bible), is one of our guiding principles.

The Brigades programme is designed for boys and girls of 5 – 18 years and above, who are divided into groups or sections. The lowest section passes on some members to the next section every year. The programme includes, among others, the following topics:

  • Bible class or its equivalent
  • Drill & Physical Recreation
  • Health Education
  • Community development
  • HIV/AIDS and drugs abuse
  • Cults and the dangers of emerging social trends like devil worship

The bulk of Brigade work is done by volunteer men and women who are 18 years and above. It is an international and interdenominational movement, with regional and global network.
